About
NeighborGoods was started by a small group of students at La Salle University in the Spring of 2008. NeighborGoods volunteers collected furniture, appliances, carpets, school supplies, etc. from outgoing students who would otherwise have throw their materials away. With the help of several students, faculty members, and the staff of La Salle's Multi-Cultural center, all the donations were redistributed to local charities and/or parishes. This past May, nearly half of all donations went directly to the Salvation Army, while the rest went to a local domestic abuse shelter; women who graduate the program will use the donations to furnish their new homes and apartments.
Following the success and enthusiasm of the first run of the NeighborGoods program, we have begun planning for May 2009. If you're a La Salle student interested in volunteering next year, or you're a club leader who wants to bring a group along, please feel free to contact Chris Chamberlain. You can e-mail him directly at JChristopherC@gmail.com, use the form on the Sign Up page, or leave a message on the NeighborGoods Blog. We're always happy to hear your comments and suggestions.
Finally, as identified in the project's original proposal, one of our goals is to expand the program to other colleges and universities. If you are interested in implementing the NeighborGoods Collection Drive at your school, please let us know. Our immediate focus will be spreading the program to Philadelphia schools, such as Temple, Drexel, Penn, and Philadelphia University, but we have every intent of growing to include any school that wishes to participate.
